Personally, I didn't know that ducks can produce over 100 eggs per year! In September 2023, we received a special gift of two live ducks, so we now have added duck farming to Gobelo Farm! Muscovy is a large breed known for being cleaner than other duck breeds. They are also quieter ducks and they are prolific, they produce large clutches. One hen can apparently hatch 12 -30 ducklings and they are said to be good at taking care of their eggs and hatching ducklings.
When it comes to egg-laying, female ducks, or hens, are discerning about their nesting sites, often selecting concealed spots in tall grass or reeds for the optimal protection of their eggs. Understanding the frequency and quantity of egg-laying is essential for planning out your dark farming operations. Ducks typically lay eggs every 24 to 36 hours during the peak laying season, which is generally in the spring and early summer. Here in Zimbabwe, we have seen our first clutches in October/November.
To prepare for the egg-laying, it’s important to ensure that your ducks have access to a nutritionally balanced diet, as this directly impacts the quality and quantity of the eggs laid. Additionally, providing ample access to fresh water is essential for overall duck health and optimal egg production. I added a second female duck soon after the first female laid her first eggs. She dropped her eggs in random places, so next time around we will work on creating nesting boxes to encourage the hens to lay their eggs in predictable places with better nesting conditions.
The total number of eggs laid varies among duck breeds, ranging from 60 to 120 eggs per year. If you’re looking to maximize egg production provide your ducks with a secure and comfortable environment, complete with suitable nesting boxes filled with soft bedding. So far, our small family of ducks has been relatively easy to maintain. They’re an eco-friendly addition to the farm and I’m excited about the future culinary potential for Gobelo Marketplace, the natural foods restaurant chain we're establishing in Zimbabwe.
